Finger Millet Pepper balls:
Good Day Folks! Happy Ganesh Chathurthi in advance to one and all! Today’s recipe is based on our super millet “Kelvaragu/Nachini/Finger Millet/Ragi and it is a spicy kozhukkattai.It is a healthy dish for snack box or dinner. I make it a point to use millets and whole grains atleast thrice a week to reduce the intake of white rice. Check all millet recipes here .Without much of other talks let us get into the recipe.
Finger Millet Pepper balls
Ingredients:
- Finger millet flour/Ragi Flour-3/4 cup
- Rice Flour-1/4 cup
- Water-1 cup(as needed)
- Salt-As per taste
To Temper:
- Oil-1 tbsp
- Mustard Seeds-1/4 tsp
- Urad Dhal-1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves
- Pepper powder-1 tbsp
Procedure:
1.Measure all ingredients and keep them ready.
2.In a pan dry roast both the flour together in low flame for 3 minutes.
3.Simultaneously add salt to water and allow to boil.
4.Switch off the pan and slowly add the boiling water little by little to the flour and mix well.
5.Remove the flour from the gas top and knead it make a soft and smooth dough .
6.Make small balls out of the dough and steam in a steamer or idly pot for 10 minutes.
7.Now remove the steamed balls from the steamer and allow it to cool.
8.In a pan add the tempering elements and saute it with the balls.
9.Mix well and serve.
Notes:
Add water little by little and slowly mix it to make a smooth dough.
You can grease your palms with oil before making small balls.
Allow the steamed balls to cool before tempering.
Adjust pepper as per taste.
Ragi flour can be replaced by any millet flour.
You can use the same dough to make string hoppers/idiyappam.I shall post it next week.

Avoid salt for babies less than one year.
Babies above 6 months can be given with less spices after having ruled out allergies of individual ingredients.
