VARUTHA PARUPPU SURAIKKAI ADAI|LAUKI CHILLA

Bottle Gourd Adai:

Varutha Paruppu Suraikkai Adai-It is nothing but a thick dosa made with roasted dhal, rice and some bottle gourd. The basic recipe for this is from our family’s traditional recipes.I have just made some simple variations and believe me it was great in taste. It is a filling and tasty dish which can be preferred for breakfast and dinner. You can serve with some butter and jaggery(which is the usual combo at home)Wish you all happy weekend guys.

Ingredients:

  • Bottle Gourd-1/2 cup chopped
  • Idly Rice-1 cup
  • Toor Dhal-1/4 cup
  • Red Chilly-6-8
  • Onion-1 cup chopped finely
  • Salt -To taste
  • Oil-To cook

Procedure:

1.Measure all the ingredients and keep them ready.

2.In a pan dry roast rice and dhal for 10 minutes in medium flame and 5 minutes in low flame. The rice with turn slightly puffy and an aroma arises.Stop roasting now.

3.Add this to 3 cups of water. Do not let it cool or rinse after this step.

4.Let it soak for 3-5 hours.

5.The water would have been absorbed by the rice and dhal.

6.Now hing,bottle gourd,salt,red chillies,soaked dhal and rice to mixer and make a think batter.

7.Add the chopped onion to the batter and mix well.

8.Grease a dosa pan with some oil and using a ladle spread the batter.

9.Close and cook for 3-5 minutes in medium flame.

10.Flip and cook the other side.

11.Serve it warm with coconut chutney.

Notes:


Do not make the batter watery.

The water poured would been absorbed as you soak. Do not add excess water while grinding.

Choose a fresh bottle gourd.

You can use green chilly too.

Adding onions is totally optional.Adding chopped shallots will enhance taste.

Cook in medium /low flame .

Serve when it is warm otherwise it would become hard.

Avoid salt for babies less than one year.

Babies above 6 months can be given with less spices after having ruled out allergies of individual ingredients.

Always have a word with your doctor before offering any new food to babies.
