Millet Venpongal:
Millets-They have occupied my kitchen to a huge extent. I experiment with them in every possible way from simple/old pongal to baked goodies like cakes/cookies/muffins. The best part of this is our family has become used to this and we have millets at least thrice in a week.Today’s recipe is a simple ven pongal with millet(varagu/thinai/saamai/pani varagu) in pressure cooker.I have already posted a sweet pongal recipe with millet and our traditional pongal cooking. This is a super quick version for busy mornings. Find all millet recipes here
Ingredients:
- Millet-3/4 cup
- Moong dhal-1/4 cup
- Water-3 cups
- Salt-To taste
To temper:
- Cashews-8
- Ghee
- Pepper-6
- Cumin seeds-1 tsp
- Curry leaves
Procedure:
1.Measure and keep the ingredients ready.
2.Soak the millet and moong dhal for 1/2 hour.
3.In a pressure cooker add ghee and heat it.
4.Add the tempering elements and add the soaked millet, dhal after draining the water.
5.Slightly saute it and add salt,3 cups of water.
6.Pressure cook for 4 whistles
7.When the pressure is released ,mix well.
8.Serve it hot with chutney/gothsu/sambhar.
My Observations:
To enhance the taste, dry roast moong dhal before adding to water.
You can add green chillies in tempering elements.
Avoid salt and cashews for babies less than 1 year
