Thooyamalli Upma Kozhukattai Recipe

With preparations for Diwali on, here is thooyamalli upma kozhukattai recipe which can be your easy and healthy breakfast. I have tried this twice and we loved enjoying it both times. I have used the traditional rice variety called thooyamalli here and the raw rice variant.
Thooyamalli Upma Kozhukattai Recipe
Ingredients: (Serves 3-4)
- Thooyamalli raw Rice – 2 cups
- Coconut (grated) – 1/2 cup
- Salt-To taste
- Water-3.5 cups
To temper:
- Oil- 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds- 1/4 tsp
- Urad Dhal-1/4 tsp
- Gram Dhal-1/4 tsp
- Curry Leaves-A handful
Thooyamalli Upma Kozhukattai Recipe
1. Measure the ingredients keep them ready.
2. Clean the rice well and run in the mixer in pulse mode four-time (Till it breaks into Rava size)
3. Add oil to a pan and temper it with the tempering elements.
4. When why splutter add the broken rice and mix well.
5. You can add grated coconut and salt and mix well.
6. In a sauce pan boil water and add this to the broken rice.
7. Cook by stirring occasionally till the water is all absorbed.
8. The entire mass will turn into a non-sticky dough.
9. Roll into a small kozhukkattai and steam cook for 15 minutes in a steamer.
10. Serve it with spicy chutney.
11. The raw rice kozhukattai made with traditional rice is ready
Notes:
You can also dry roast and then break the rice.

How to store these?
These indigenous rice varieties don’t need fertilizers or chemicals to grow. So you have to store it carefully to avoid any bugs. You can buy two or three varieties every month in minimal quantity and try. Prefer using red chillies and vasambu or bay leaves inside open packets. If you buy in large quantities please freeze them and used dried neem leaves in the container.
